Good Girl, Mommy

I say a prayer with Megan before she sleeps every night. Last night, after listening to mommy pray and saying good night to Jesus, two-year-old Megan turned around, looked me in the face and said:

"Good Girl, Mommy!"

I was so amused that I only managed to respond after good few seconds with a "Thank you, sweetie..."

The lil' one has also been telling our helper "Good job!" whenever auntie Yani did something to the little princess' satisfaction.

When she starts going to school, she is so going to turn the whole house into her classroom, make all the adults become her students and call her "Miss Megan". Oh, my future is so bright.

Megan Turns Two!

I've been too lazy to update this blog, but have been posting some photos on facebook, so I am going to let the pictures do the talking. Thanks for checking on this website from time to time, and I will try to update this as I upload photos on facebook. Click on the links to see the albums.

First of all, Megan had just turned two! She had two intimate and endearing birthday parties in Singapore and Hong Kong, with her favorite Spongebob and Dora respectively. She is also turning into quite a feisty little toddler who knows what she wants, and is not one to suffer fools. Like her mommy, she has developed a fondness for shoes, mangoes, durians, shoes, ben and jerrys, shoes, chanels, shoes and shoes, and both Megan and mommy have been getting their share of eye-rolling from Megan's papa because he couldn't believe that God has given him another woman to fight over his shoe and wardrobe space. But that's another story for another time. The past two years with her had been nothing short of wonderfulness, and we are grateful that God has granted us with this sweet child, she who shows her mommy what love is, and teaches her mommy forgiveness. I look forward to many, many more years with my babe.

In other news, Megan's parents went for a holiday late last year and early this year.

In an effort to dissuade the little one from hijacking my laptop all.the.time, I bought her a kiddy laptop which was on sale. Nevermind that the package recommended it for children five years and above. As long as she liked it and left mine alone, why not?

And if anyone's wondering, we haven't successfully potty trained her yet. She's using the potty as a chair instead. Oh well, at least it is getting some use!

Shoes-holics R' Us

The babe's inventory as at two months ago. We have added a few more to the stock since then. *The husband just sighed -again- as he eyeballed his wife's and daughter's ever expanding shoe collection*.

A Baby's Conversation with God

A baby asked God, 'They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?' God said, 'Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you.'

The child further inquired, 'But tell me, here in heaven I don't have to do anything but sing and smile to be happy.' God said, 'Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you. And you will feel your angel's love and be very happy.'

Again the child asked, 'And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language?' God said, 'Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak.'

'And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?' God said, 'Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray.'

'Who will protect me?' God said, 'Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life.'

Professional Haircut

Megan, like me, was born with comparatively little hair. Like my mom, I do not believe in in the old wives' tale that shaving an infant's hair would help it grow back thicker and fuller. My mom did not shave off my brother's and my hair when we were infants and we both sport full, thick hair. To each her/his own, I simply could not bring myself to put a razor to my baby's head -- it just sounded like a very bad idea and actually abusive. And why does it have to grow faster? Babies have a long way to go and the hair will get there soon enough. Whenever I come across another baby's hair shaved, I couldn't resist muttering "It's genetics, stupid!" under my breathe.

But I digress. So with Megan's very little hair she needed all but 3 haircuts in the past year. Her first haircut was done by the husband. He snipped off so much of her already scarce hair that she looked like she really belonged to a parent who had no idea whatsoever (well, I think the husband *really* didn't at that time). So when the babe was due for her subsequent haircuts, I fended off all his ernest, persistent offers to pick up the scissors and brought her to a salon.

And now a rant: Her most recent haircut was one of the worst experience I've had in a salon. We went to a neighborhood salon near our apartment. Poor Megan was brawling her eyes out because she was feeling tired and the hairdresser didn't have much patience for babies -- at one point he was using a little too much force to my liking to get Megan tilt her head the way he wanted her to and I was on the verge of doing one of my WTFs to him but lucky him, I think he saw my I AM GOING TO KILL YOU glare and reversed his attitude gears. That place left such a bad taste in my mouth that I refuse to pollute my blog with photos of that forsaken salon. End of rant.

When Megan and mommy went back to Singapore again in May, mommy 's initial worry that Megan would act up, create a scene and embarrass mommy to no end (because papa wasn't there to share the embarrassment) during the flights was unfounded. The little lady proofed to be the perfect travel companion!

I lay here getting ready for bed tonight.
I call for Mom and Dad with all my might.
I am afraid because the world is so new.
Here comes Mom and Dad, they look tired too.

The world is new and so much to see.
Tomorrow is another day of learning for me.
Today I cried but not due to pain.
I heard my first storm and saw my first rain.

My mom would hold me and tell me it’s ok
Dad would rock me to sleep at the end of each day.
Watch over them as You do over me.
I love my Mom and Dad, as You can see.

I know I am new but I have one thing to ask.
Nothing real big, just one small task.

Megan's First Steps

No photos to show yet but today I witnessed Megan walking on her own..two days shy of her first birthday! At one point Miss show-off walked to my dressing table, tip-toed to reach for the blackberry, held the blackberry in her hand and walked about 8 steps on her own (although still unsteadily) to pass it to me. We know that girls are supposed to develop faster and there might be babies already walking at 7 months yada yada but like any parent, the sight of my baby taking her first independent step still made us beam with indescribable pride.

Last weekend, Megan and I took part in a charity walk organized by my company to raise funds for the Sichuan earthquake victims. While shocked at the severity of the merciless calamity, I have been touched by the speed and amount of aid from everywhere rushing to those affected. So when the office organized this charitable event, I decided to bring Megan along. One can never start too young.

With natural disasters occurring more frequently than ever, with wars that are destroying homes and political situations that are tearing families apart, it has become increasingly clear that the opportunity for a whole family to live each day peacefully is not a given. Each brand new day is truly a gift from God and I count my blessings everyday. I pray that I will learn to give selflessly as He has toward me, and that little Megan will grow up to live by God's way.

In other news, I am very proud of Megan's progress. She could now walk a few steps steadily if she wants to! *beams* She has also learned to 点蟲蟲 (thanks to her 婆婆), and loves to show off her actions skills. She loves to alternate between clapping, twinkle twinkle little star, high-five, and 点蟲蟲. When mommy gives her a flying kiss she would respond with a "mu-ak" sound for mommy. She is a real tease and we love her so.

Say Cheese!

Like her mummy, my little darling has an independent streak in her. As soon as she found out how much she could do with her hands and how far her legs could bring her a couple of months back, she embarked on an exciting adventure and my nightmare also started. She would recently managed to stand without support for a good many seconds, and thanks to the walker that my mom bought, she could walk 2-3 steps when she really wants to.

My little baby is also fast growing into a toddler. I put her in her bumbo chair a few weeks back before we packed it off to another younger baby, and was amazed at how fast she had grown:

The babe went on a vacation last month and everyone pampered her like royalty. Needless to say, she had hellavu time in Singapore. She went for walks with granddad every day, got chauffeured around by the grammies whenever she "appeared" to be bored, had her first dip in the pool, had her very own 8th-month-old birthday party (err yes, her mommy's idea), and the list goes on. And yes, how can I forget her having a field day collecting ang-paos (lai-sees to the HKies). I am also happy to report that the babe did extremely well on her first plane ride -- she was exceptionally well-behaved to my pleasant surprise, and only whimpered a little when she wanted to be taken a walk along the aisles.

Since she was in Singapore on her '8th month birthday', her mommy decided to (get her grandma) organize a party for the lil' one (and an excuse for more fooood). Who says birthdays can only be celebrated annually, anyway?

I love her rosy cheeks -- they went pink throughout because of the heat.

Megan digs gadgets - cell phones, blackberry, laptops, remote control, iPod...you name it. Put a soft toy and an iPhone in front of her, and she will reach for the iPhone without hesitation. The look of concentration on her face whenever she would explore each gadget thoroughly is priceless. That day, the little darling was as usual eyeing on her mummy's laptop......

Ever since the little darling could stand, she has been trying to do everything in a standing position. She has started to walk a few steps with our support as well. Her legs are still not strong enough, so she would usually lean onto whatever is within reach for support. I am happy to report that she has been able to stand for longer periods before falling back into the sitting position.

In the food department, she is doing ok. She does not seem to like porridge that much, so we will gradually introduce more solids to make her porridge tastier. She enjoys baby biscuits, cereals, apples and bananas, but refused to eat papayas. Last week the husband stopped me from giving her some ice-cream. Not a very fun dad he is, I say. Oh well.

A chip off the old block, they say. It's an amazing, indescribable feeling, when your offspring resembles you. But then again, I cannot imagine the princess looking like a girl version of the husband. No offense to him, but thank God.

A few evenings ago, Megan stayed awake way past her bedtime and refused to go to bed. Since the husband was going to the store to get some supplies, I sent the little darling along with her papa and asked her to help papa carry the shopping bag. The little one took her responsibility quite seriously and took the bag from my hand with a "no problem, mum" look:

When I woke up this morning, I found Megan standing in her cot, leaning onto the sides for support and glaring into my unwashed face and uncombed hair. Apparently, the little one woke up before we did, and decided to quietly peek at her zzzing parents...

And when I said "Good Morning Megan!", she returned the greeting with this:

Progress!

I have no pictures to show yet but I can't wait to record Megan's progress this week:

- Started to stand (with support) at 6 months, 4 weeks old

- Can pull herself up to a standing position while sitting, using whatever she can grasp as support. Today, using the sofa handle as support with one hand, she pulled herself up *shakily* and used the other (free) hand to reach out for a toy that was on the coffee table. Her mummy is both proud and lamenting that from now, this baby cannot be left out of sight for even 1.8 seconds. (7 months minus 1 day)

- V-E-R-Y vocal. When she's happy, upset, tired, awake, hungry, full, but especially when she wants to get her way. I wonder where she got this triad from. keke. However when there are strangers around, the little one would become a preppy little princess and behave like an absolute darling in an instant. Acting could be another of her career option perhaps?

She also went for her 6-month check up some weeks back and passed all the tests (motor skills, listening, sight, and the rest I forgot) with flying colors. Thank God and His angels for guiding the little one!
